When I first entered the homeopathic field, many people questioned me about my choice. A field that was unheard of to many, homeopathy was seen as a dying field with very little career prospects. However, being Indo-Canadian, I had been exposed to the magic of homeopathy from an early age. Whenever I would visit India, my colds and flus were always treated homoeopathically. In Canada, however, I never saw any signs of homeopathy, which is why perhaps, it never occurred to me while growing up that I should consider being a homeopath.
It was only after I graduated University, when I went to a graduate fair, that I saw a table that was advertising the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine. I took a brochure and never really thought much about it. Until, one day I met a Homeopath who was visiting from India and he encouraged me to think about the program. I decided to give it a try and set up a meeting with the school. Once I enrolled, it was very intimidating. There were so many remedies to learn about, I was very intimidated about having to learn everything and use it well enough to help someone.
Despite being intimidated by the studies, the thing that kept me in the program was the principle behind homeopathy. Homeopathy, I learnt, was a field focused around individualizing the remedy to a patient. This means that while two people may come in with a headache, the medicine they receive would be different, based on their history, the reason behind their headache and how they are experiencing the pain. In my 3rd year, when I joined clinic and was able to take patient's and see this principle in action, I absolutely fell in love with the field.
During my time in clinic, I loved how we would see patients come in with problems that seem so normal, such as allergies and pains, but when we would sit and talk to them, their history was so powerful, that you could make links between traumatic events in their lives, and their allergies. Each new consultation would take a minimum of three hours, where we covered their past, their fears, and events in their lives that shaped their personality. After listening, it always felt so good to see the patient leave feeling lighter, by just having someone listen to their problems. Then, when we would go through the case and study it, I always found it so fascinating that when we matched the patient with a remedy, it not only covered every single complaint they had, but also covered their lifestyle and personality. This realization that it was possible to individualize treatment to this extent, is what interested me, and seeing it work on live patients is what made me realize that this is a field I am proud to be in.
Through this page, not only do I want to advertise my practice, but I also want to spread awareness on homeopathy, so it is once again a field of medicine that is widely available to the public, and is respected for what it is. A natural and holistic medical field.
